The Unikko pattern was created in 1964 after Armi Ratia, Marimekko's founder, publicly declared that no floral fabrics would be designed at the company. In response, Maija Isola defied this rule and designed an entire collection of bold floral patterns, including Unikko—Finnish for poppy. Today, Unikko is one of Marimekko’s most iconic and globally recognized designs.
