FAQs

How to mix dining chairs?

You can mix and match your modern dining chairs to create a unique space design:

  • Match the same colour chairs of different styles. This way, you maintain the original colour palette you were going for, but add something special to the room's design that will always draw attention.
  • Match different colour variations of the same chair style. If you mix and match your dining chairs this way, you will create a harmonious pop of colour without disturbing the way lines and shapes come together in your dining space.
  • Match by the sameness - same material or the same style. Another great way to make sure you are playing around with styles and designs while keeping a balanced aesthetic is to choose dining chairs that are different from each other but can be linked by being made of the same material or being in the same style. For example, you can pick different chairs made of the same type of wood.
  • Use the surrounding elements. You can choose varying dining chairs and instead focus on pairing them with other furniture and decor elements in the room. For example, choose a chair that will be the same colour as your drapes, a chair with the same colour palette or a pattern as the abstract painting on the wall and a chair matching the dining table. While totally mismatched, this combo will still make it feel like everything is neatly tied together.

A factor to remember when mixing modern dining chairs is that there are no rules - just choose good quality chairs, play around with the design and make the room feel like yours.

How much space does a dining chair need?

The rule of thumb for creating the right amount of space around your table and chair setup is 24 inches of space for every person seated around the table, and 36 inches from the table to the closest obstacle on every side. Also, ensure that there is enough space for everyone sitting on the dining chair in terms of the space between their legs and the underside of the table. There should be enough space to comfortably fit the legs and possibly a napkin on top of them.

Do dining chairs have to match the table?

It’s all up to your taste, but modern dining chairs don’t have to match the dining table. You can choose a table and set of dining chairs that are in the same style or in the same colour, or you can choose a table and chairs that don’t match with each other at all and might, for example, match a certain decor or furniture element in the room.

You might want to make sure that at least a few elements in your room have some matching colours, patterns or styles, but it’s not strictly necessary. It all comes down to your personal preference.

How to clean dining room chairs?

Our range of dining chairs consists of designs featuring wood and leather upholstery. Here are a few tips on how you can clean this type of dining chair:

  • You can clean them with a damp cloth or sponge, ensuring you dry them thoroughly
  • To get rid of dirt that is stuck to the dining chairs, you can use some baking soda to scrub it off
  • Using special formulas such as wood and leather cleaners can also be a good way to clean your dining chairs. Ensure you use them safely and in accordance with the instructions

How do I choose a good dining chair?

There are several things to remember when choosing a dining chair that will best suit your lifestyle, needs and space:

  • Measure your area and leave a good amount of space between your table and dining chairs and the rest of the room’s interior elements such as furniture and walls
  • Choose dining chairs made of the material that will suit you the best. Solid oak frames paired with fabric or leather upholstery offer flexibility to suit a range of interior styles.
  • It’s best to come to the store you are buying your chairs from and assess the comfort and quality in real life. Make sure that you feel comfortable using the chair, and that the chair's height leaves enough room for your legs under the table. You’ll need to also choose whether you’d prefer chairs with or without the armrests.
  • Think about the overall design of your space and whether you want your chairs to match or contrast the existing interior.

Why are dining chairs important?

Dining chairs are one of the essential parts of your dining room that majorly add to the comfort, convenience, design and functionality of the dining area.

What kind of dining chairs are there?

At The Modern, we offer a range of contemporary dining chairs that are made using high-quality materials such as wood and leather, and fall under the category of Scandinavian furniture design.

What makes a sturdy dining chair?

A sturdy dining chair combines high-quality materials, top-notch production and attention to individual details such as legs and corner brackets.

What do you call dining room chairs with arms?

Dining chairs with arms are commonly referred to as Carver chairs.

What's the difference between a side chair and a dining chair?

Side chairs are generally designed without armrests and sit along the long sides of the table. A popular choice when selecting dining chairs for a rectangular dining table is to opt for two Carver chairs to sit at each end of the table with side chairs along the long edges.
